What to Put in a Newborn Baby Gift Set (and What to Actually Skip)

What to Put in a Newborn Baby Gift Set

Buying for a new baby is one of the loveliest things. But it's also surprisingly easy to get wrong. I know, because before Milkmoon, I was the person receiving the gifts — and as a mum of six, I've had plenty of time to form opinions on what actually gets used and what quietly gets donated.

So if you're putting together a newborn baby gift set — or buying one — here's my honest guide to what's worth including, what's a bit of a waste, and how to make it feel really special. ☽

Why a Gift Set Beats a Single Item (Almost Every Time)

There's something about a beautifully presented set that feels so much more considered than a lone babygrow in a bag. A thoughtful gift set tells a new parent: someone put real thought into this. And when you're sleep-deprived and running on love and biscuits, that genuinely matters.

The key is choosing pieces that work together and that the baby will actually wear — not items bought just to bulk the hamper out.

The Best Things to Include in a Newborn Baby Gift Set

1. A Soft Babygrow or Romper

This is the cornerstone of any newborn gift set. Babies live in babygrows in those first weeks — they're easy to put on, easy to wash, and utterly cosy. Look for 100% cotton, a generous cut (newborns grow fast), and a design that's soft enough for delicate skin.

At Milkmoon, our babygrows and rompers are chosen with exactly this in mind. Nothing scratchy, nothing overly complicated — just beautifully made pieces I'd happily dress my own little ones in.

2. A Knitted Cardigan or Jacket

Layering is everything with newborns. Rooms change temperature, prams get cold, and a soft knitted cardigan is the most useful thing a baby can own. It goes over everything and makes even the simplest outfit look lovely.

3. A Hat or Bonnet

Newborns lose heat through their heads — a soft hat is both practical and adorable. A handmade cotton bonnet is one of those items that photographs beautifully too, which matters more than anyone admits.

4. A Soft Blanket or Muslin

Every parent will tell you they didn't have enough muslins. They're used for everything: wiping, swaddling, covering the pram, laying down as an impromptu changing mat. A beautiful one in a gift set always gets used.

5. A Milestone Card or Keepsake

This is a lovely touch for a gift set — something the parents can use to document their baby's firsts. It doesn't take up much space and it adds real meaning.

What to Leave Out of a Newborn Gift Set

A few things that sound lovely but rarely earn their place:

  • Baby shoes — newborns don't need them and feet grow so fast they're rarely worn
  • Bath sets with strong fragrances — newborn skin is sensitive and many parents prefer plain water for the first few weeks
  • Toys with lots of stimulation — lovely later, but a bit overwhelming in those first days
  • Too-small sizing — if in doubt, go up a size. Newborn can mean anything from 5lb to 10lb

How to Make Your Gift Set Feel Really Special

The presentation is part of the gift. A beautiful box, some tissue paper, a handwritten note — these are the things people remember. At Milkmoon, every order is wrapped in tissue with a thank-you card from me, because I think that's how gifts should feel.

If you're putting together your own set, take the time to wrap it properly. A gift that looks beautiful before it's even opened sets the whole tone.
