The Newborn Capsule Wardrobe: What You Actually Need

When you're expecting, the baby clothes are one of the loveliest things to think about — and one of the easiest to overbuy. After six babies, I've learned you need far less than the shops would have you believe. A small, well-chosen capsule of soft basics will see you through those first weeks beautifully. Here's what I'd actually pack. ☽

Why a Capsule Works for a Newborn

Newborns grow astonishingly fast and spend most of their time feeding, sleeping and being cuddled. They don't need a wardrobe — they need a handful of soft, practical pieces that mix together and wash easily. A capsule saves money, saves space, and saves you standing bleary-eyed over a drawer at 3am.

The Newborn Capsule Wardrobe Checklist

Bodysuits / vests — 6 to 8

The foundation of everything. Short-sleeved cotton bodysuits layer under everything and get changed often. Buy a mix of newborn and 0–3 month sizes.

Babygrows / sleepsuits — 6 to 8

Where your baby will live in the early weeks. Look for 100% cotton, poppers along the legs, and an envelope neckline. I've written a whole guide on choosing the best babygrows if you'd like the detail.

A knitted cardigan — 1 or 2

Layering is everything. A soft cardigan goes over any outfit and adjusts for changing room temperatures.

Hats, socks & scratch mitts

A couple of soft hats (newborns lose heat through their heads), a few pairs of socks, and scratch mitts for surprisingly sharp little nails.

A blanket & muslins

One lovely blanket for warmth, and more muslins than you think — they're used for absolutely everything.

A going-home / special outfit — 1

One piece you love, for that first journey and the photos. It doesn't need to be fancy, just something that feels special to you.

How Many of Each?

If you're washing every day or two, the numbers above will see you through. Newborns are gloriously messy, so you'll get through more bodysuits and babygrows than anything else — those are the ones to stock up on.

A Note on Fabric

Stick to natural fibres. 100% cotton breathes, washes well and is gentle on brand-new skin. Avoid synthetics, which trap heat and can feel scratchy.

What You Can Skip

  • Shoes — newborns simply don't need them
  • Lots of one size — they grow too fast to wear it all
  • Fussy outfits with rows of buttons — fiddly at 3am
  • Strongly fragranced bath sets — newborn skin prefers plain

If you're packing all this into a hospital bag, my mum-of-six hospital bag checklist covers exactly what to bring for those first days.

Every piece we stock is chosen with these early weeks in mind — soft fabrics, simple fastenings, and designs I'd happily put my own babies in.
